Mentors will provide guidance to Ready2Teach students during their year of residency, and will therefore be chosen based on the success of their clinical experience in the classroom.
University supervisors will explain the residency program, along with information pertinent for the success of the Ready2Teach program, to mentoring teachers. Understanding what is expected from the teacher candidates in the classroom, as well as how to guide them through their residency period, will benefit both mentoring teachers and the students reaching the end of their education and the beginning of their teaching career.
Students beginning their year of residency will meet with their mentoring teacher in order to begin planning for the upcoming school year. Discussing classroom management, differentiated instruction procedures, and the timetable for the upcoming year will allow the teacher candidate and mentor to build a relationship before the students enter the classroom.
As students return from their summer vacation, both mentor and teacher candidate will begin their year of co-teaching. Once all requirements are met and you have been accepted into the Teacher Education Program on your campus, you will begin your third year of post-secondary education by gaining content knowledge and teaching skills before the residency experience of the final year. Your Junior year will be crucial in understanding what to expect in the classroom by allowing you to develop content to use during early, structured exposure to schools in the Ready2Teach program.
Field experience during the third year of Ready2Teach will be driven by guided practice, and will demonstrate structured scenarios similar to what you will face during the residency portion of your final year in the program. Early exposure to the classroom coupled with guided instruction and content development on campus will allow for a smooth transition between leaving the campus and entering the education system the following year. Students will enter classrooms to execute lessons created with help from professors on campus, and learn how to adapt and apply what they have learned throughout the Teacher Education Program in this field experience process.
To remain eligible to graduate through the Ready2Teach program, it is necessary to continue to maintain the required GPA for the Teacher Education Program on your campus. Ask your advisor if you are unsure of the requirements for your school.
Measuring knowledge of specific subjects through the Praxis II assessment is required for earning your teaching license. Multiple tests are required for completing the Praxis series, so be sure to check with your advisor to determine the tests you will need to pass for your chosen area of focus within the educational program at your school.
Knowing first aid, CPR, and how to operate an AED can save the life of one of your future students. Most colleges and universities will offer a class to earn your certification, or recommend a local training class if not. Review the course catalogue for your school or ask your advisor where to receive your first aid, CPR, and AED certifications.
In order to be protected in the event of a legal issue arising during your teaching career, it is important to obtain personal liability insurance. One option is to join the National Education Association (NEA), as membership includes access to not only resources and tools for your classroom, but also admittance into the Educators Employment Liability (ELL) insurance program at no added cost.
Before entering the fourth and final year of the Ready2Teach program, it is crucial to attend various seminars on your campus concerning the teaching profession and your future experience in the classroom. Familiarize yourself with the schedule of relevant seminars at your college or university.
Seniors will spend their fourth and final year in the residency portion of the Ready2Teach program. Working in the classroom using methods from pre-residency years spent on campus, and having the opportunity to practice co-teaching alongside the instructor with whom you have been paired, will give you a full year of in-class practice before gaining your own set of students post graduation.
To remain in the Teacher Education Program on your campus, as well as the Ready2Teach program, you must maintain the grade point average required by your college or university throughout the year of residency.
Each campus gives a Senior Exit Exam to measure the critical-thinking skills of the graduating senior class. Register to take your exam, and inform your assigned instructor of the test date well in advance so he or she can plan for your absence from the classroom.
Job fairs are crucial to beginning your teaching career after the Ready2Teach program is complete. Plan to attend all job fairs in your area, and polish your resume to demonstrate your skills as an educator. Seek out Career Services on your campus for additional help with creating your resume and information about the interview process.
Applications for a teacher license must be submitted to your college or university to begin the process of obtaining your Apprentice Teaching License. Your school will then send the application and required coursework to the Tennessee Department of Education for processing. Your institution must give a recommendation for your licensure, based on completion of the Teacher Education Program, teaching assessment scores, and your clinical field experience.
